THE SYSTEM

How South African Income Tax Works

South Africa uses a progressive tax system. For 2025/2026, the lowest bracket is 18% on income up to R237,100, while the top rate is 45% on income above R1,817,000.

How RA Contributions Reduce Tax

You can deduct up to 27.5% of taxable income (capped at R350,000/year). At a 36% marginal rate, R10,000/month saves R3,600/month in tax.

How is PAYE calculated?
PAYE is calculated by your employer based on annual tax tables. Your monthly salary is annualised, tax calculated, then divided back monthly.
Can I claim RA contributions against tax?
Yes. Up to 27.5% of the greater of your remuneration or taxable income, capped at R350,000/year.
What is the tax-free threshold?
R95,750 for under 65, R148,217 for 65-74, R165,689 for 75+.
How do medical tax credits work?
R364/month for main member and first dependant, R246/month per additional dependant.
